Dominic, This question came up last September, beginning with message #4364.
It would be worth it to go back and follow the thread that ensued at that time. There were lots of interesting suggestions, including heat pumps, rotary driven friction devices, and of course plenty of details for resistive electric heating. As for my hydro hot tub, its still on the drawing board. For now I'm content with my outdoor hydro-powered shower from the hot water tank that serves as my dump load once the batteries are charged. I'm planning to use some of that surplus heat for a hydronic heating loop through my battery/inverter shed to keep the batteries comfy this winter.
