In that same line of thought a refrigerator can consume large amounts of energy if
those 'Dust Bunnies' are not cleaned out regularly. In preparing my home for RE I
found I couldn't get my daily KW usage down below 6KW. I finally bought a Kill-A-Watt
meter and started testing different appliances. I was astounded to find my frig was
using 3.5 to 4 KW a day. I thought about tossing it out and buying another one, but
decided to see how dirty it was underneath and clean it out if needed. It was packed
with Dust Bunnies from my two dogs. I got the ole shop vac out and cleaned it up and
now use from 1 to 1.25 KW a day. A more efficient one or a propane one may be in the
future, but for now I am vigilant in my hunt for those energy robbing dust bunnies.

Now to get my level out and check that too. (thanks for that tip!)

No-cost hint to save electricity all year. ENERGY.2

A lot of people don't know this, but a refrigerator will
run more efficiently and cost you less money in utility bills
if it's level. To test if your fridge is sitting level, place
a glass of water inside, and see if the water level is parallel
to the rim. If not, something simple like a piece of cardboard
underneath the fridge can make the difference.
