Murray,

No, the idea is not crazy, but perhaps difficult to make practical. The
Tennessee Valley Authority (large electric utility) has the Racoon Mountain
Pumped
Storage Facility near Chattanooga, Tennessee. This plant has large
pump/turbines that pump river water up to a lake on top of the mountain during
the
night and times of low demand. During peak hours, they reverse the flow and
use
the pumps as turbines to generate power. Of course, they lose some power,
because they do not recover as much as it took to pump the water up the
mountain.
But they gain in that it costs less than running gas turbines for peak loads.

Your wind powered-pumped idea will work if you can match up your wind power
capacity, water storage volume, and your power needs.
