Sounds like you have a good micro hydro site for
battery based system. I think that a pelton wheel or a
turgo wheel(as in the "stream engine") would work
fine. Is the 60 gal/min figure year round? The high
voltage unit as you suggested also sounds good though
another possibility may be worth considering. My House
was also a considerable distance from my
stream(700-800ft.), but was able to run the penstock
much closer to the house. I had to run a discharge
line 400 ft. to the stream. I only run at 15
gal/min(185 ft. Head) so the extra 2 inch PVC wasn't
that expensive. I would assume you will need a larger
size- perhaps 3 inch - so cost may be a deciding
factor even if your geography would allow for this
idea. I think that Paul Cunningham at Energy Systems &
Design offers some high voltage alternatives and would
be a good person to talk to(506) 433-3151. If you
could get the turbine within 500 feet or so you might
be able to use a 48 volt DC alternator and design a 48
volt battery bank system and avoid the extra
complications and inefficiencies of transforming
voltages. Those are my thoughts for now.
