Dear Xavi,
Pumps as turbines are fine on clean water and if the flow rate is known
and constant. I would however suggest extreme caution when using them on
projects where the site data is not good (most rural electrification and
microhydro projects!) as they are very inflexible and usually very
difficult to clean. The argument that you can screen the water is not
valid in my experience because 'things' and 'creatures' always manage to
get in somehow and if you cannot clean it out 'in the dark' in less than
five minutes, I think you will have a problem.

Subject: [microhydro] inverted motors and pumps as turbines

Hi group,
I'm still studying different possibilities in microhydro. I have read a
little in using "inverted motors as a generator" and "pumps as a
turbine". Could anyone tell me which are the advantages and the
inconvenients for these two groups? I think that is not the price the
only reason to replace them, isn't it?
Thanks a lot.
Best regards,

Xavi
