Dear all!

Last weekend I spent a number of hours working through Dr. Donat Banki's
original paper on the crossflow turbine, and reducing it all to a simple
program. This program designs the turbine and penstock, starting from
gross head and flow, allowing the user to select RPM (within reasonable
limits), and producing the basic dimensions of the turbine.

The program makes a number of informed guesses of values such as nozzle
loss, pipe roughness, and so on. It has default values for everything,
so it should be easy to use even for first timers. But it does not check
the user input, working instead on the BIBO principle: Bullshit in,
bullshit out...

I have put the program on my web site, so those of you who are
interested can try it. Of course, I would be VERY interested in
feedback, specially from people who have experience with these turbines
and who can tell me whether the output makes sense.

So far the program only calculates the basic dimensions, with a
provisional and not yet accurate estimation of the mechanical load on
the blades. I intend to add full structural calculation, so that the
program can also calculate things like the blade thickness, and then
compensate the nozzle dimensions for the blade thickness... That will
come soon.

You can download the program here:

Have fun, and tell me any mistakes you find!
Manfred.
