To Whom It May Concern:

Hi there. My name's Tom Pendrey, and I am studying mechanical engineering at
Edinburgh university. Currently doing a 4th year group design project of
designing a hydro scheme. I was wondering if you could help me out with some
information please, or recommend me some other sources of information, or give
me some advice.

I am at the stage of costing a small hydro scheme in Glen Kinglass just west of
Loch Lommond in Scotland. The head = 70m, and we expect a design flow rate of
around 1.4m^3/s, possibly 2 though (sorry - our civil engineering data was
questionable).

The 2 choices I have thought about for a drive transmission are: 1) using a
direct flexible coupling from turbine to generator with a custom built
generator for the speed of our turbine; or 2) a simple belt system linking the
turbine to a standard generator. I realise that maintenance costs would be
lower with the direct coupling, however initial cost would be higher.

I'm not sure how much piping we will have. The turbine we will probably want to
use is a francis, thouch possibly a cross-flow such as Turgo.

I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me! Thank you for your
time.

Regards,

Tom Pendrey
