Subject: [MidHudsonBirds] cannot identify

I saw a bird this morning that I cannot identify through charts, books or
websites. It is small, bottom half of back somewhat resembles woodpecker
but has a beautiful designof black and white, almost like a herald on
stationary. Upper back is a dark tan, solid color, not brown.
I am not sure if its mate was on other side of large tube feeder. End of
tail was not tapered but more split like a finch.
thank you.
Noreen, saw this bird in Putnam Valley area.
