Hi All:
I am a member of your group and have been for many years despite the fact
that I live in Florida now. I used to live in Saugerties in Ulster County
until poor health forced us to sell and move south.
I have been a volunteer for US Fish and Wildlife for four and half years
down here for Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. They do issue us id's
and volunteer shirts and hats and badges. And, you are correct; they do hand
out magnetic USFW seals to afix to our private vehicles, if we have to use our
own vehicles, to id us to the public. I'm sure Wallkill NWR can issue this
gentleman such seals.
I sent letters and attended meetings and contributed my birding records
that helped create SGNWR several years ago. We were all ecstatic when West
Point turned it over to Fish and Wildlife and it became a wildlife refuge.
I know it certainly bugged me when I'd bird at SGNWR and saw ATV's that
definitely should not have been there and I usually reported them.
We should also be glad, despite his misbehaviour, that this guy has
volunteered to keep an eye on the refuge for us. Our volunteers down here at
the refuge are some of the nicest folks I have ever met and some of them are
are now amongst my closest friends.
Hope to meet some of you at the refuge down here sometime if you come to do
some birding.
An aside; had my first ever Pine Siskin in Florida on my feeders yesterday.
Good
birding and stay warm!
