Hi all, Last weekend a birding friend and I saw what we ID'd as a Lark Sparrow in Ulster County. This is waaaay too far East for the bird's current range. However, all the field marks were right and it was NOT a Song Sparrow or Tree Sparrow. Clear breast with pinpoint on chest. Head was right. Seen for a long while on a post in a field near water while we diligently thumbed through all our sparrow pages and peered on. It IS on the NYS checklist. I hate to impose. Does anyone have it listed on a past field trip? Or can anyone confirm that a Lark Sparrow could have been off course in NY state? Super grateful thanks to all, Deslie Lawrence **************************************************************************** ************ I contacted the posting person and found out that the bird was seen on June 5th in Kerhonkson/Accord, Ulster County. I'm forwarding it on to this list in the chance that anyone familiar with the species may have something to offer. Here is the response: Here are the details you asked for: the bird was sighted Saturday June 5 in the afternoon on a post in a field in Kerhonksen/Accord, NY. We sat for a long period of time on a special platform that was built around a tree, about 15 feet off the ground (rope ladder to climb). Good views from there. The bird stayed long enough for us to check all the possibilities in our field guides for rule-out possibilities, since it was distinct from the Song Sparrows. This bird stood out right away. We have both been birding for 25-30 years now.
