As a mechanical engineering major at MIT, I was able to do a short test drive of the Chrysler turbine car. It was very cool looking, but my classmates and I quickly discovered a serious flaw: turbine lag. When you floored it, there was a several-second lag before noticeable acceleration kicked in. Not going to get you out of a tight spot! We were not surprised they never put it into production.

The first is a bad rendition of New York Central’s mid-1960s M-497 “Black Beetle” experiment, using a modified Budd RDC-3 and General Electric J47-19 turbojets (surplus from a Corvair B-36). On July 23, 1966, the car reached a speed of 183.68 mph (295.6 km/h) on a test run between Butler, Indiana, and Stryker, Ohio. It did not have flames coming out the front of the jets.
