As a mechanical engineering major at MIT, I was able to do a short test drive 
of the Chrysler turbine car. It was very cool looking, but my classmates and I 
quickly discovered a serious flaw: turbine lag. When you floored it, there was 
a several-second lag before noticeable acceleration kicked in. Not going to get 
you out of a tight spot! We were not surprised they never put it into 
production.

Soviet jet train built in the 70s

The idea was simple. Install aircraft engines on a train car that can no longer 
be used in the air, but can still be used on the ground. According to the 
project, such engines should push the train car.

To create an experimental jet train, engines used on the Yak-40 aircraft were 
chosen. It was decided to install them on a modified ER22 lead motor car with 
modified aerodynamics. In particular, fairings were made on the car body, under 
which the car wheels were removed.

A car with a jet engine was created in one copy and for five years from 1971 to 
1975 it was used for running tests on the railway line as part of the ER200 
project.

In 1972, the car reached a speed of 250 km/h on the Dnieper Railway, which 
became a record for Soviet railways.

In 1975, after the release of the ER200, the need for a high-speed train with 
jet engines disappeared and the project was cancelled.

 

My response:

 

The text refers to the second image. The first is a bad rendition of New York 
Central’s mid-1960s M-497 “Black Beetle” experiment, using a modified Budd 
RDC-3 and General Electric J47-19 turbojets (surplus from a Corvair B-36).

 

On July 23, 1966, the car reached a speed of 183.68 mph (295.6 km/h) on a test 
run between Butler, Indiana, and Stryker, Ohio. It did not have flames coming 
out the front of the jets.

 

The stupid is strong out there.
