Jack, I clicked the link and read the article. The analysis looks sound. The A350 has a higher cruise speed and a tailwind. One difference that was not mentioned is the cruise altitude. A heavily loaded 777-300 will fly at a much lower altitude than an A-350. The wind planning for the a 777-300 at FL310-330 at level off will be entirely different than an A350 which might be up at FL370 initially. In the case of engine failure the difference in drift down performance might be even more significant. Notice that the route taken by the JAL flight is mostly over water. The Finnair flight is over some seriously high terrain. I don't know the engine out performance of the 777-300 but I'll bet it isn't as good as the A350. Eric
