I got mixed up with Mahan Air of Iran once. Three ex-United 747s went through the same sort of aircraft laundering process engineered by a London-based plc run by some Iranian businessmen/expats who utilized shell companies in different jurisdictions.  During the process, i.e., before the aircraft the delivered to Iran or registered there, the expats coaxed an engine out of our lease pool team to replace a faulty one (the aircraft has been stored in a US desert). It later transpired that the aircraft with our spare engine on it was delivered to Mahan. We had a hell of a time getting it back; it came down to a swap of sorts at a Persian(Arabian) Gulf airport (I think Dubai but not sure) where Mahan received another engine and then we received ours. I recall there was a great article in the FT about the whole affair, and there was groundbreaking litigation over existing mortgages on the aircraft.

A quick check shows that Mahan is still operating one 747, along with an election collection they have been axle to smuggle into Iran. Man those guys are survivors.

These aircraft and those from previous, devious deals all need spares.

 

Without spares, they can't operate. Where are these spares coming from? Who is in their supply chain? How is it that this is never uncovered?
