Thanks Kathryn for reminding us of this important holiday. It was proclaimed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 to coincide with the birthday of Orville Wright who was the pilot of the first flight at Kitty Hawk. As one retired airline employee noted "Without the efforts of the Wright brothers we might have been flipping burgers at the local cafe." Of course I have a special affinity for the Wright brothers since I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, the Birthplace of Aviation. My mother used to recall that when she was a little girl she would go with her father to the Huffman Prairie Flying Field to watch the Wrights testing their airplanes.
