Pan Am operated A310s, both the -200 and -300 models in transatlantic service, including JFK. Most, if not all of these aircraft came over to Delta when it acquired Pan Am’s Atlantic operations.

PA’s naming of their aircraft was always cool and it was fun to see which Clipper was going to be your ride. Wish I’d kept a log. From: Karl L. As for the A320’s, that might have been more of a Toulouse dream than part of the original Acker deal. To my knowledge, no A320’s were ever part of any operating plans, but the replacement of the A300B4’s was indeed both types of A310’s. The A300’s remained in the fleet, serving East Coast, southern transcon and Caribbean and medium-range Latin American routes, even though they had more seats than needed on most of those missions. No comparison with modern day orders in the high double- or even triple-digits. Most memorable for me was a Jethro Tull concert and the announcement that Airbus sold a pile of airplanes to Pan Am. Not sure if they were white tails, but I had a sense that was the case. Boeing made its first 737 delivery in December 1967. Airbus followed more than 20 years later with the A320. As of early August 2025: Airbus has delivered 12,153 A320s. Boeing has delivered 12,175 B737s. In the next few months Airbus should overtake Boeing to make A320 become the best-selling aircraft in aviation history. Fun fact: my first day on the job at Airbus was the day the A320 program was launched: we share the same Airbus start date and anniversary date. TR
