AA’s unions have a real dilemma. If the airline isn’t profitable and can’t afford to grow, it doesn’t create advancement opportunities for members. In addition for many employees their compensation, benefits and schedules are tied to seniority at the single company, so they are trapped there. It’s true that AA’s management has been making poor decisions which have hurt the company. But in general, the unions don’t help the company and seek to extract the maximum from the company for employees. Are they going to offer up higher productivity and higher service standards?
