Dan,

Back in the 707/DC8 days when I first dipped my toes into this crazy business,
I joined and eventually managed the operations of a multi-location travel
agency in LA.

We were of course frequently visited by sales reps of the “big three”—American,
TWA and United—all seeking favor, knowing that some movie studios were high up
on our client roster.

But what stays in my mind was American’s override commission (yes, there were
such things) structure. The only thing that mattered was how many passengers
we booked on AA flights between LAX and IDL (Idlewild, now JFK). That metric
alone determined the monthly override percentage, which applied to total AA
revenue.

How times have changed. . . .

Tom,

Extremely informative chart. For full assessment of competition in this market,
it would be necessary

to include EWR-LAX for United (and any other?) players. To avoid offence to
other Mifnetters, I will

merely point out the progressive decline in AA's share of what had long been a
pot of gold. Talk about

destruction of shareholder value and employee morale.
