Southwest has lost the one thing that made them successful—differentiation versus the other guys. No assigned seating was viewed as a plus by many (not me). And no bag fees were obviously a selling point. Now they will be like the big guys, but without a F class, and no airport lounges which are ostensibly designed to attract business traffic. The simple little airline has lost its way.

If it was so great, why didn’t they do it years ago? Lack of assigned seating was one of the things that I didn’t like about them. I heard that they are also going to start charging for checked bags. Will this cause them to lose traffic, or are they hoping that assigned seating will make up for the checked bag fees. They seem to be losing the things that made them different from legacy cariers. <image001.png> From: Jack Keady via Mifnet <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2025 4:28 PM To: David Wardell via Mifnet <[email protected]> Cc: Jack Keady <[email protected]> Subject: [Mifnet 🛰 74062] Southwest A 380s CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Southwest considers widebodies for long-haul strategy<https://r.smartbrief.com/resp/uhzmCylCtempeUhUaBazvMalTdVG?format=multipart> Southwest Airlines has begun exploring a long-haul strategy that could include widebody aircraft, with CEO Bob Jordan noting that the carrier's all-Boeing 737 fleet is not suitable for long-haul flights. "Everything is on the table," Jordan says. "It could be that a widebody is just too much."
