Jack, It's much the same on the fly by wire Airbus types. If the aircraft systems detect a thrust loss with subsequent swing it will automatically apply a chunk of rudder to counteract some of it. It still leaves enough rudder trim imbalance though to allow the pilots to correctly assess the situation. Hence the pilots stilp feel and see similar clues to correctly confirm the failed engine in the way they have always been trained to.Having booted off the sideslip caused by the asymmetric thrust the flying pilot will then apply a load of rudder trim via the trim switch but the first 10 seconds or so of trim application actually does nothing. This is because the aircraft has already moved the rudder such that the trim system now had to "catch up" with the aircraft's input. Once the trim position matches the aircraft's previous input any subsequent trimming is all done by the pilot. In short, the system helps out at the critical phase whilst still keeping it all intuitive, as per basic pilot training. It also does some seriously clever stuff with the sideslip display but that's another story that's properly ensconced in Nerdsville.Simon -------- Original message --------From: ERIC Smith via Mifnet <[email protected]> Date: 07/11/2025 23:41 (GMT+00:00) To: Jack Keady via Mifnet <[email protected]> Cc: ERIC Smith <[email protected]> Subject: [Mifnet 🛰 74664] Re: engine out protocols Jack,It sounds like you're talking about the "wheel to rudder cross tie" and the other system(can't remember the name) which assists the flying pilot during asymmetric thrust thrust. It doesn't actually take control away from the pilot. The pilot can give control to the plane by turning on the auto pilot. Remember, when you lose an engine on the 777 you're down to your last 90,000 lbs of thrust. If Boeing added something since I left it I'm not aware of it. Eric, who is in CLT for his last recurrent training. On Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 02:48:41 PM EST, Jack Keady via Mifnet <[email protected]> wrote: keadyI was told that the 777 had an integral "engine out" system that immediately took over from the flight crew and automatically adjusted for an engine out situation.Did the MD-11 have such a system? This is not suggesting anything involving the UPS tragedy --------------------------------------------------------------------------Revised: 20250507You are receiving The Mifnet because you requested to join this list. The Mifnet is largely a labor of love, however the infrastructure isn't exactly cost-free.
