I was inside Boeing for the merger, the word going around in the trenches was "*McDonnell Douglas bought Boeing with Boeing money.*"
Even now, after almost 30 years, it looks like they were right. Actually the MAX debacle made the point about the culture. This MD-11 problem is just an inheritance IF it was a design flaw. 34 years of maintenance can contribute. I'm really curious about the cycles on this particular engine pylon. I'm pretty sure any DC-10 or MD-11 freighter would have higher cycles than the long haul passenger planes. I'm hoping there is a real fleet leader out there somewhere. If so you can bet the NTSB has that information. Still, with the accident pylon having ~21,000 cycles against a calculated (and likely rig tested) ~29,000 cycle threshold, I'd be really nervous pointing to that as the probable cause.
