Happily for all on board, can we stipulate that the Short Solent passed
"under" rather than "through" Tower Bridge?

It is interesting that BOAC and other airlines, including Air France,
continued to operate flying boats post-World War II.
The development and production of 4-engine land-based transports would seem
to have minimized the need for water-based operations.
However, for British Commonwealth and French colonial island possessions
without appropriate runway capability, presumably
flying boats were in fact needed.

Sean Duffy would like to see passengers -- and their behavior -- revert to
"golden era" airline operations. I would settle
for a new-generation SST, but would not bet hard cash on that possibility.
I remain convinced that in the real world passenger behavior is more
important than passenger clothing, although bare feet and potent body aroma
certainly cross red lines. Then there is the issue of airline managements
who choose to abuse their customers with shrinking seat pitch and
supplementary charges, generating passenger meltdown.
