A reasonably good high school student should be able to manage the derivation for Special Relativity quite easily. That is one reason for the shock value. I found it easy as a senior. General Relativity, on the other hand, requires some familiarity with tensors and other things not encountered in high school, 1916 or now. I encountered General Relativity four years later, in a college class on modern physics, and it was a real workout.
