It's not always easy for my fellow public relations professionals that work for our nation's airlines. In this era of instant video/social media/viral video/AI/everybody wants attention, you have to have your head on a swivel and try as best you can to both anticipate possible crises to respond to and be prepared for rapid response to something you likely have not seen before. I suspect this one falls into the latter category.
In this case, I give kudos to Delta's PR team for a well-crafted statement. First thing I thought of when I saw the woman on the floor of the aircraft was, "well this does not look safe."
