On November 1, 2011, a Boeing 767 made a successful emergency landing without
landing gear with 231 onboard the flight.

LOT Polish Airlines flight 16 was heading from Newark, New Jersey to Warsaw,
Poland. Shortly after taking off from Newark, the pilots were alerted that one
of the hydraulic lines was leaking, and hydraulic pressure had dropped
considerably. After the pilots figured out what flight systems would not be
affected by the loss of hydraulic fluid, they decided to continue the 8 hour
flight to Warsaw.

The captain’s autopilot system was able to fly the whole route without any of
the flight controls being affected by the leaking hydraulic line. The pilots
knew that when coming in to land, the flaps would be extended and the landing
gear would come down using the alternate system.

When on final approach, the flaps were extended, but the landing gear wouldn’t
come down. The pilots tried a second time and still nothing happened. The
Polish Air Force sent a couple of military jets to fly beside the aircraft, and
they confirmed that the landing gear was not down. So the pilots declared an
emergency. Warsaw Chopin Airport was evacuated and the runway was covered in
foam to prepare for the plane to land. The pilots were flying a hold for 72
minutes to burn as much fuel as possible.

The plane came in for a belly landing.

The plane made a successful emergency landing in Warsaw, and everyone evacuated
the aircraft. There were no deaths or injuries in this incident, and the pilots
were praised for their landing. Captain Chesley Sullenberger contacted the
pilots to congratulate them on the emergency landing.

Investigators found out that in the center hydraulic system, a hose was leaking
fluid which resulted in the drop of pressure. And for the landing gear not
being extended, there were two circuit breakers that had popped out and needed
to be reset. These circuit breakers were placed behind the first officer’s
seat. Neither of the pilots could see the popped circuit breakers because the
panel was located out of the pilots view. Once the circuit breakers were put
back into place, the landing gear came down.
Captain Tadeusz Wrona was awarded the Officers Cross of the Order of Polonia
Restituta for completing a belly landing which resulted in no injuries.
