Richard, I would recommend reading through the developer documentation on the BI Suite: http://mifosforge.jira.com/wiki/display/MIFOS/BI+%28Reporting%29+Documentation
Additionally, since the Mifos BI Suite is built on top of Pentaho, an open source product, I would search online as that is more likely to have the more relevant information to building reports - then you can use the link above to get more details about what was done specifically for Mifos. Lastly - might be worth joining the developer community, that's where most general development questions should be posed. Best of luck!
