@ Diane,
when it is showing "authentication required" , just cancel it. log out and
re-login with your new username. Again goto Admin>>Users and click on the
user to set the original username.
If you just want to change the password, but not username, you can do it
without any problem in Admin>>Users and clicking on particular user and
there is a tab at right top corner ie,, "change password"..
