PPTP is fairly insecure. 

With regards to using OpenVPN, the OP's solution is to use port forwarding which implies the Firewall on the Mikrotik is active.  You may need to specifically tell the Mikrotik to accept OpenVPN on the input chain.

Thanks - but no firewall was involved in the testing. 

After many hours of testing many different combinations of OpenWrt, Linux, Mac OSX and Mikrotik I have given up on the combination of OpenWrt+Mikrotik.
I couldn't get Mac+Mikrotik to work either but don't actually need that.

I decided to just port forward to jump past the Mikrotik so I will have OpenWRT on my end and Linux on the remote end. Makes the routing a little clumsy but I can live with that.
