Well since MT broke cli input commands between version and didn't maintain 
backwards compatibility the text based backups for older versions don't work.  
Rancid, even if the diff doesn't work (which it does for me) still provides a 
full text backup on a schedule which is still useful.  I haven't had any issues 
importing back into a like device with same ROS using rancid.  Rancid will 
screw up the output if you run it in the shell manually, vs running it in cron. 
The shell wraps things to 80 characters so your diff breaks. Also the OVPN mac 
address changes every backup so have to set that to a bogus to avoid that.  
It's not perfect but it's better then no solution.

The .backup files, I always avoid those. Text backups, even if you can't import 
them at least can be picked through.

We've got several 750g, 751, 750up out there with little issues. I think the 
new low cost MT stuff is crap tho. Plastic ethernet connectors? Ugh.

I do think v6 is going to be a nightmare.
