I've done the exact same as described in the first email with no issues. With PPTP I found a lot of issues, mainly with PPTP binding itself to an interface and using it to forward. Even if a better route becomes available, it only seems to reroute when the physical interface state changes.
Also, PPTP encryption has been known to be weak for many years. At least with IPSec you can set it to use stronger protocols like AES for encryption and SHA for hashing.
