Bloggers - The Personal Pages of Today
by Eric Jones
I remember when I got my first web page up back in the early 1990's. It was of course
a personal page full of useless information about my family and me and filled with
animated graphics. Of course back then we didn't worry about HTTPS, server security,
identity theft etc. It was all about building the page, and getting excited when you
crossed the 100 hits mark.
After I got bored with that site then I began my career in the web design business by
building many other sites that were more on an informational, entertainment or
business genre. Now I'm not going to complain here, these sites are fun to build and
I've learned a lot since my early days with HTML 1.0 - 2.0, but something was missing.
It was never personal or about me really. Sure I could build a site for my web design
business (can you believe I haven't done that yet!) but it's wasn't what I really
wanted.
So I came to the conclusion that I needed to build a personal site, but not just any
personal site, I wanted the world to really get to know me. I started out with the
domain name search and I got really, really lucky with this part. I had a domain that
had been purchased by a friend of mine that never got fully developed. So I grabbed
the domain and placed it on my VServer account.
The Idea
So the idea I had wasn't anything new or revolutionary. In fact it's been around for
years but it's only recently that we've actually heard anything about it. What's this
idea? On-line journals or, as the industry is dubbing them, "Blogs," and the people
who write them, the "Bloggers". Basically it's you spouting off ideas, thoughts, views
etc. "Blogging" means saying whatever you want, and saying it to the masses. Many
Blogs are for news, or link finding. However, most of them are about personal
activities, and some are even related to business and family events.
A Brief History Lesson
Personal pages have always been notorious for having a few quirks:
1. Tons of animated graphics.
2. Line images instead of '< hr >' tags.
3. Devoid of anything worth talking about.
4. Made for the family not for the Internet.
They are also known for being slow loading, and clip art intense. The newer personal
pages, the web logs, are a different story. People that have a knack for HTML, CSS,
JAVA, and many other forms of coding, build the blogs. Basically the web logs are a
cross between a web designer's homepage and a personal homepage. Some are better than
that.
How Do I Blog?
Blogging is easy. It's just like writing on a piece of paper or talking into a tape
recorder. The first thing you need is a place to store your blogs. The great thing
about Blogging is that you can do it anywhere: on a free host, a paid host with a
domain or without a domain. Most Bloggers aren't going to care if you are on a
Geocities site or on you very own paid domain.
Once you've decided where you're going to store your thoughts, you need to figure out
how you are going to present them. Of course you'll have your Website but the key here
is getting your thoughts onto that site. You have a few recommended choices:
A. Just hard code your thoughts into the pages.
B. Use a CGI Script like NewsPro to automatically generate the content.
C. Use a service like Blogger.com to generate the content.
You're going to find that most of the masses are using the Blogger.com route. It's
easy, dynamic, highly customizable and of course it's all free.
