who aren't using Outlook/Express: I've worked out what it is now - it's
because I've got Thunderbird set up to reply after the quoted text; if I
leave the milton-chat sig in the quoted message, the software cuts it
there. So I'll remove it in future!]

Thanks so much to everyone who replied so quickly both on and off list -
very helpful. Having had a good look at them all, including uswitch.com,
I've decided to go with Tim's suggestion of EBICo - it's a brilliant
idea: ethically based, simple, and as cheap as most of the commercial
offerings.
