Thanks for the pointer, I will look into the
package. If I can get it to work I will submit an alternative. I notice on
the cpan docs that under bugs is listed:
Net::DNS is slow.
Anyways I will try get my head around it and
test it.

I'm leery of anything that requires signal
handling, especially
SIGALRM.
I believe the Perl module Net::DNS has
functions for doing timed-out DNS
lookups using select(), and I'd be happier
with those.
