I am running four SUN 420s with 4 processors and 4GB, solaris 8, sendmail-swtich, and mimedefang 2.39 which calls spamassassin. Last week we handled about 12.5 million email messages. Which is a clear overload for these servers. The load average stays above 20 for much of the day. It looks like we have an even higher volume this week.
I have increased to MAX_SLAVES=60. I still get a lot of "No free slaves" messages in the log file. It is clear that I am using MAX_SLAVES=60 to limit the number of connections. I am not sure thats a bad thing, since the servers cannot work much harder. Does anyone have any wisdom on tuning an over worked server?
