We use Dovecot, but we only have a dozen or so users. It's still noticeably faster than UW-IMAP. One of our users has an INBOX with 11,000 messages in it, totalling 456MB, and Dovecot screams through that. It took around 15 seconds to open the first time, and was almost instantaneous once Dovecot had indexed it. For a really large installation, I'd choose Cyrus over Dovecot or UW-IMAP, but migrating mail from UW-IMAP to Cyrus is a real pain. (In fact, that's why I chose Dovecot: Copying the mail over involved rsyncing mbox files, and after that, everything Just Worked.)
