The GNU triplet for MSYS is "i686-pc-msys". It compiles to a binary linked to msys-*.dll comparable to how cygwin works (it emulates POSIX as much as implemented). It is a form of virtualization on Windows to provide a minimalist POSIX environment. MinGW(-w64) is basically GCC for the Microsoft CRT with some very limited extensions for some basic POSIX functionality (rather unusable, but still present). It compiles native Win32 applications, just like MSVC does.
