The GNU triplet for MSYS is "i686-pc-msys". It compiles to a binary
linked to msys-*.dll comparable to how cygwin works (it emulates POSIX
as much as implemented). It is a form of virtualization on Windows to
provide a minimalist POSIX environment. MinGW(-w64) is basically GCC
for the Microsoft CRT with some very limited extensions for some basic
POSIX functionality (rather unusable, but still present). It compiles
native Win32 applications, just like MSVC does.
Msys is a different ABI from mingw(-w64) tries to stick as close to
MSVC's as possible.

This would not show the connection between mingw.org and mingw-w64,
which are two "parallel" projects, one which adds more functionality
(like a x64 compile path and associated functionality, an experimental
threading API for std::thread/libgomp type stuff).
