Well, I can imagine. Polygon filling can't be very fast.

The fastest way is to generate an OpenGL texture with the gray values, and 
draw a flat rectangle filled with that texture using the 3d-turtle 
graphics.

The thing I've still to do is to add text drawing to the OpenGL graphics.
