first, I'd like to apologize for answering with such a delay. Not nice.

I think the lack of the URL signature can be an oversight. It should be there. 
It can quite easily be added to the URLs in the mirror list.

Then, thinking it a bit further, like you suggested, the links on the mirror 
list will of course time out after a certain time. So either the interval needs 
to be long enough to keep the links valid (right?), or they need to become 
dynamic while picking a mirror.

So far, there is no way to tell MirrorBrain that a certain mirror is to be 
preferred. It could be an interesting feature though. Expressing the preference 
could happen by a cookie, a http header or a query string appended. All that 
could be useful.
mod_mirrorbrain sends the mirror identifier with the X-MirrorBrain-Mirror 
header, and this identifier could be reused I guess. Anyhow, this could be 
interesting for other purposes as well.
