You are might be thinking about using something like thermite. (Please note that thermite is dangerous stuff to play with because it does reach around 3000 C.) An oxy-acetyleme torch would be just as effective and a whole lot safer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermite Tim Donahue
