In defence of SCSI (and of the people buying it), there's more than a cost/GByte ratio. Reliability and performance are some of the things that just cost money. Whether those things are worth it to you, fortunately, is entirely up to you. Seeing the rest of your post, it seems you determined what was enough and further limited your expenses.
