Your good intentions notwithstanding, pointing people to the sane
habit of checking archives before extracting them may be just as
useful.

tar tvzf src.tar.gz

Alternatively, extracting into a temporary directory can't hurt
either. I found untaring the files into the wrong directory quite a
powerful learning moment.

That said, I wonder why src.tar.gz and ports.tar.gz differ in
directory structure. Feel free to enlighten me on that score.
