Top speed for usb1.1 is roughly 1MB/s. Your getting that. :|

Two possibilities - your mobo doesn't do usb2.0 - or the ehci
device probe isn't grokking your hardware.

Thank you Andrew and Peter for the explanation of why that drive is so slow. I "inherited" it at work. It's also got a firewire interface, so perhaps when firewire support comes along it will actually be usable.
