A few months ago on some other mailing list it was suggested to use UDF
as a "lingua franca" filesystem -- at least in theory every major
operating system should be able to use it.

I've always wanted to try it, but I've never been able to find something
akin to newfs_udf or something similar, and mkhybrid also does not seem
to be able to generate UDF filesystems. Allegedly, Macs have a
newfs_udf command, but that of course does not help much.

Has anybody tried something similar and got it to work?
I do not depend on such a thing, I'm merely curious. And also, it would
be very nice for USB sticks.
