IIRC you can create "virtual" serial for a VM, then you have to
whitelist the location on the host (stupid VMWare).
If there's netcat/socat on the host you could tunnel it via ssh.
Maybe something like this (untested)
ssh esxi "netcat -U /path/to/virtual_serial.sock" | \
socat STDIO TCP-LISTEN:5500
telnet localhost 5500
