I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I use setxkbmap
... -option 'grp:shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll'; this allows me to switch
between layouts pressing both shift keys, the "scroll lock" tells me
which layout I'm using. Hack taken from kbd(4).
