Growing the GENERIC kernel (such as by adding a ramdisk) can write beyond the intended area. Raising NKPTP on i386 isn't always enough. I don't understand the problem well enough to provide an immediate solution. It has been a while since I've seen problems on i386 or amd64, but GENERIC keeps getting bigger :) Chris
