For md5(1) (and therefore, sha1(1), sha256(1), sha512(1)), the man page has this:
"-q Only print the checksum (quiet mode)." Since this has the same behaviour as "cksum -q", would it be best to keep it in line with it: "-q Only print the checksum (quiet mode) or if used in conjunction with the -c flag, only print the failed cases."
