It wouldn't surprise me that the USB stack can get wedged if it does lots of IO. ext2fs probably has other bugs, but I wouldn't expect it to just hang. It would more likely trash your files in a reasonable amount of time. Bugs in USB do get fixed over time, although it's rarely obvious what the problem is from any one report.
