My guess is that ld.so throws away the library cache if it finds that it's stale, and thus can't know where liblzo2/liblz4 are to be found. The easy fix would be to make ld.so search in /usr/local by default, but I'm not sure this would be accepted. So I just documented the LD_LIBRARY_PATH hack in the README instead.
