Hi Stuart, I think that I know the problem. pkg_add will search python in stable directory before searching for it in release directory and it find python. However it will only find version 3, because there is no python 2 in stable directory.
So it will stop searching (because it found python) and report that there is no python 2 available. I had similar problem with pkg_info, but I don't know Perl well, so I couldn't fix the issue.
