I don't consider that to be the same thing. If you donate, you don't pull any strings, and you're not part of the decission making process, you are if you sponsor or god forbid, invest though. Microsoft outright owns Github itself, it acquired Github back in 2018, yet go many "I HATE EVERYTHING MICROSOFT" people choose to ignore that fact. -- lain.
